The 787B with a 24 V loop supply, so a transmitter can be powered and read without a separate source.

The 789 adds a 24 V loop supply to the 787B, and that single addition changes what you can do on a bench or a dead loop: power a transmitter and read it in the same operation, with no separate supply to find and wire in. For commissioning work, where loops are frequently not yet energised, it is the more capable of the two.
