Complete PPE Checklist for Construction Sites in Dubai
What a Dubai site actually needs to issue, why heat changes the calculation here, and the checklist to run before work starts.
Personal protective equipment is the last line of defence, not the first. The hierarchy of control puts elimination, substitution and engineering controls ahead of it for good reason. But on a live construction site in Dubai, PPE is what stands between a worker and the hazard that could not be designed out — and it is what an inspector will look at first.
Head protection
A hard hat is mandatory on any site with overhead work or moving plant. Check the shell for cracks and the harness for stretching; a helmet that has taken an impact is finished, even if it looks intact. Chin straps matter more at height than most sites treat them.
Eye and face protection
Impact-rated safety glasses are the site baseline. Move up to goggles for dust and grinding, and to a full face shield for cutting, chipping and chemical handling. Welding requires the correct shade for the process and current — a shade that is too light is a slow injury rather than an obvious one.
Hearing protection
If you have to raise your voice to be heard at arm's length, the noise level warrants protection. Earplugs suit long shifts and heat; earmuffs suit intermittent exposure and are easier to police because you can see them from across a site.
Respiratory protection
Dust is the constant here — silica from cutting and grinding, cement dust, and the fine sand that gets into everything. A disposable dust mask handles nuisance dust; anything involving silica, fumes or solvents needs the correct filter on a properly fitted half mask. Fit is not a formality: facial hair defeats a face seal completely.
Hand protection
Gloves are the most-used and least-considered item on the list. Match the glove to the hazard — cut-resistant for handling sheet and glass, chemical-resistant for solvents and cement, insulated for live work. A general-purpose glove used for everything is the wrong glove for most things.
Foot protection
Safety boots with toe protection and a penetration-resistant midsole are standard. On a site with rebar and offcuts underfoot, the midsole is the part that actually gets used. Look for slip resistance and, for electrical work, appropriate insulating properties.
High-visibility clothing and coveralls
Hi-vis is required wherever plant and people share ground. Coveralls protect against abrasion, splash and sun. Both need to be sized properly — loose clothing near rotating plant is its own hazard.
Fall protection
Above two metres, or wherever there is an unprotected edge, fall arrest becomes the priority item. A harness is only as good as its anchor point and the inspection behind it. Harnesses need documented periodic inspection and immediate withdrawal after any arrested fall.
The part that is specific to here: heat
The UAE midday break rule prohibits outdoor work during the hottest part of the afternoon through the peak summer months. Beyond the legal requirement, heat changes PPE decisions in practical ways. Heavier protection increases heat load, so the right answer is often better-ventilated equipment rather than less of it. Hydration, shaded rest areas and cooling accessories are part of the same conversation, not separate from it.
Before work starts
- PPE matched to the assessed hazards, not issued generically
- Correct sizes available — including for anyone new on site that morning
- Fit testing recorded where respiratory protection is required
- Damaged items withdrawn, not returned to the store
- Harnesses within their inspection date
- Replacement stock on site, so nobody works unprotected waiting on a delivery
